At present, our city has twinned with Mishima City of Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan, and has forged friendly exchange relationships both with Rahway City of New Jersey in the United States, and Yeosu City in South Jeolla Province in South Korea. Longquan City (a county-level city of Lishui) has established friendly exchange relationship with Gangjin County of South Korea.

Introduction of Sister Cities

Lishui City twinned with Mishima City of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

Lying on the east of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan, Mishima perches at the edge of Mount Fuji, which is the throat of Izu Peninsula. It is approximately 100 kilometers away from Tokyo and occupies a total area of 62.17 k©Owith 11.1 kilometers across from east to west and 13 kilometers from north to south. The city has an estimated population of 110,000. Its city tree is ginkgo and its city flower is Mishima Sakura.

The industry of Mishima City mainly centres on manufacturing business including service, construction, commerce, transportation, machinery, metals and food processing. Among its gross value of industrial output, the output value of electrical machinery occupies 30.1% and that of general machinery 16.7%. Its agricultural modernization has equally reached a high level. Its crop farming mainly produces paddy rice, potato, cabbage, carrot and flowers. Its animal husbandry raises cow, meat cattle, layer chicken and table poultry.

In Mishima, there are 14 primary schools, 7 junior middle schools, 3 high schools and 5 universities, together with National Institute of Genetics, Nihon University College of International Relations, and Center of Railway Research and Studies.

Transportation is well developed in Mishima. In the Age of Eto Shogunate, the city was called as "Mishima Eki" because it used to be one of the 53 Ekis connecting Toyko and Kyoto. Crossing the city are two railways, that is, Donghai Railway and Shinkansen. In 1997 Shinkansen Mishima Station was built, which made the city an entrance to Izu district of tourism. Moreover, No.1 National Highway also runs through the city.

Thanks to its warm climate and predominant natural environment, Mishima has been a city with prosperous civilization since ancient times. In 1993, the city was designated as a "Model District of Water and Afforestation"  by the Land Ministry of Japan. It aims to set up an "afforested and cultural city with clean water", which centers on culture, education, residence, commerce and tourism.

On May 12, 1997, Mishima twinned with former Lishui city (now known as Liandu District). The two cities have developed exchange and cooperation through exchange visiting, holding Children Painting and Calligraphy Exhibitions, donating money for school and training students of agriculture. Lishui City, which then changed from an administrative area into a prefecture-level city, renewed the agreement of establishing sisterhood relationship with Mishima City in August, 2001. The two cities carried out a second exchange visit.
